Frequently asked questions about touring caravans
Want to find more about our touring caravan cover?
If you’re wondering what our cover includes, then we’ve answered a few questions here!
- Our cover
- Travel
- Security
- Do you have to insure a caravan?
No, you're not legally required to insure your caravan. However, there is always the risk of accidental damage and recent reports indicate an increase in caravan thefts, despite improved security features. So, ensuring you have the right cover in place is important.
- What is a touring caravan?
A touring caravan is a separate mobile home on wheels, that is designed to be lightweight so it can be towed by vehicles. Caravans contain no motor engine or driveshaft, so therefore are not a functional vehicle. Touring caravans come in all shapes and sizes, and usually contain a small kitchenette and sleeping quarters for anywhere between two, four plus people. Most modern caravans will have built in heating, a shower, toilet and working appliances, but these must be connected to the mains or gas in order to work.
- Will my car tow my caravan?
The towing capacity for your vehicle, can be found on your vehicles VIN Plate (Vehicle Identification Number Plate) which is either stamped into the chassis, found in the engine bay, bottom of the windscreen or on the inside trim of the driver or passengers’ door.
- What does caravan insurance cover?
Tourer Select provides a range of cover for British manufactured touring caravans, including cover within the UK and Europe against fire, theft, storms, floods, vandalism and accidental damage. Your accessories and equipment including your essential touring items such as awnings, gas bottles, security devices, fridges and more, can be protected, along with your contents and personal effects. We also include £2m for Public Liability and European cover, as standard.
- Does caravan insurance cover accidental damage?
Our product offers cover on a wide-ranging basis within the UK and Europe and includes cover against: fire, theft, storms, floods, vandalism and accidental damage
- Is weather damage to a caravan covered in my insurance?
Yes, we automatically include damage caused by storms and floods. That even includes any accessories such as awnings, toilet tents, gas bottles, etc. that you have chosen to insure (loss or damage to awnings / toilet tents will not apply when erected and left unattended for more than four consecutive days).
- Do you cover older caravans?
Yes, we can cover British manufactured caravans that are up to 20 years old from the date of manufacture.
- What is the difference between a motorhome and a touring caravan?
Touring caravans are a separate mobile home that must be towed by a vehicle for them to move, as they do not contain an engine or driveshaft.
Motorhomes are a self-contained, modified vehicles that can be driven, as they are essentially built on a large existing chassis.
- Do you insure motorhomes?
No, we do not insure motorhomes.
- Do I need Public Liability insurance?
Whilst it is not a legal requirement, it is definitely an important feature of our Tourer Select product, with £2m cover automatically included. Public liability will cover the legal liability of the policy holder which arises from the ownership or use of the caravan. We do not cover any liability arising whilst the caravan is being towed or becoming detached at speed.
- Do you only cover UK residents?
Yes. You must be a UK resident and domiciled in the UK.
- Is there an excess on this policy?
There is a £100 excess payable on each claim. However, if you store your caravan on a CaSSOA Gold rated site and a theft occurs, there is no excess to pay (excess would still apply for other claims).
- Can I add or make changes to the policy at any time?
Yes, you can make changes to your policy by calling us on: 0345 071 1000.
You can add or delete insured items and change some aspects of your policy. Note that additions will incur additional costs. Additional premiums are charged on a pro rata basis from the date of change.
- I have previously made a claim. Will this affect my cover?
You need to tell us about any touring caravan related losses or claims you have had within the last three years, whether insured or not. It is important that you make an honest disclosure of any previous claims or losses, as this could invalidate your cover.
- Can I insure my caravan for short trips?
All of our policies run for a 12 month period.
- Can I take my caravan abroad?
Yes, our cover will protect your caravan if taken abroad to Europe for up to 240 days. This cover is automatically included with your policy.
- Are my contents insured if I take my caravan abroad?
Cover is available for up to £2,500 of personal contents taken with you and your family. Maximum £300 single article limit.
- How can I secure my caravan?
If you are storing your touring caravan in your garage or on your driveway, these additional security measures can be implemented:
-
Storing the caravan inside the perimeter of a fence or gate
-
CCTV cameras installed facing your caravan
-
Additional security / alarm systems installed in the caravan
-
Ensuring your caravan has an up to date lock and key system on all main points of entry i.e. doors, windows, and sky lights
-
Sensor lights installed facing your caravan and blind spots around your property
Caravans stored at private storage facilities, will most likely have their own security features, but you should always confirm this with the company.
-
- How should I store my caravan?
Most touring caravan owners will store their caravans at home, either on the driveway or in the garage. However, you can also store your caravan at a private storage facility if you do not have room at home.
- Do I need specific security for my caravan?
Yes, as a minimum, your caravan needs to be fitted with a hitch lock and one of the following: an alarm, hitch post or wheel clamp. Further security discounts are automatically included for other specific security features.
